The next generation of major science programs face unprecedented challenges in harnessing the wealth of knowledge hidden in Exabytes of globally distributed scientific data. Researchers from Caltech, FIU, Stanford, Univ of Michigan, Vanderbilt, UCSD, UNESP, along with other partner teams have come together to meet these challenges, by leveraging the recent major advances in software defined and Terabit/sec networks, workflow optimization methodologies, and state of the art long distance data transfer methods. This demonstration focuses on network path-building and flow optimizations using SDN and intelligent traffic engineering techniques, built on top of a 100G OpenFlow ring at the show site and connected to remote sites including the Pacific Research Platform (PRP). Remote sites will be interconnected using dedicated WAN paths provisioned using NSI dynamic circuits. The demonstrations include (1) the use of Open vSwitch (OVS) to extend the wide area dynamic circuits storage to storage, with stable shaped flows at any level up to wire speed, (2) a pair of data transfer nodes (DTNs) designed for an aggregate 400Gbps flow through 100GE switches from Dell, Inventec and Mellanox, and (3) the use of Named Data Networking (NDN) to distribute and cache large high energy physics and climate science datasets.

With this statement, the US network ESnet Chief Technology Officer Inder Monga marked the first day of the 16th WRNP, which was held this week, in Vitória. The event gathered the research community in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

Inder Monga was guided by the question “Why innovate?” and exposed how the traffic in the academic environment has evolved historically at a faster rate than the commercial Internet. He listed the characteristics of what must be the next network architecture. The redesign should stimulate greater interaction between the infrastructure and scientific applications.

The ESnet head proposed a new model for the improvement of the network flow and pointed as an alternative the Named Data Networking (NDN). It is a new type of architecture focused on content, which was indicated by its name and no longer by its physical location, defined by a network address. For the lecturer, the organizations that operate the academic networks need to “overcome software challenges”. Facing this, ESNet invests in a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) operationalization project, focusing on automation, analysis and assurance, aiming to offer operational support to this programmable platform.

The BMA7 (7th Biannual Meeting of ANSP) will not now be held in May 2015 as planned. The meeting has been postponed until the 2nd half of the year, and should take place in October 2015, along with the 8th meeting, at the FMUSP (Universidade de São Paulo – School of Medicine), in São Paulo, State of São Paulo.
The meeting has been postponed as a cost-cutting measure due to this year’s economic situation. On the one hand, with a drop in state revenues forecast for this year, it was necessary to trim 10% of ANSP’s budget for 2015 (in line with all São Paulo State government bodies). On the other, as businesses are also suffering from economic stagnation, it was not possible to obtain sponsorship for two meetings this year.

The Coordinators of the ANSP project, in order to reassure members of its ecosystem and all those who are already aware of the excellence of the activities of BMAs, wish to make it known that the meeting in the second semester will offer all the activities that were planned for the meetings of the first and second semesters of the year plus the second edition of the SwitchOn Workshop – São Paulo.

Software defined networking (SDN) refactors the relationship between network devices and the software that controls them. Opening up the interfaces to programming network devices enables more flexible and predictable network control, and makes it easier to extend the network with new functionality. Over the past several years, SDN has gained significant momentum in the research community and the larger networking industry, but many important research challenges remain.

Building on the success of the HotSDN (Hot Topics in Software Defined Networking) workshop, the Symposium on SDN Research (SOSR) is the premiere venue for research publications on SDN. Co-locating SOSR with the Open Networking Summit (ONS) provides an opportunity for more interaction between researchers and practitioners and more influence on the networking industry. In addition, registered SOSR attendees can attend shared keynote, plenary, and panel sessions, and the social event, on June 17-18 at ONS.

SOSR will accept a mixture of short (six-page) and long (12-page) papers. In addition to traditional research papers, we encourage the submission of papers that present (i) the design and applications of useful SDN tools, (ii) surveys of important SDN concepts, techniques, and standards, (iii) technical overviews of larger research projects, production systems, and use cases, and (iv) open-source benchmark suites or measurement data for evaluating SDN systems. SOSR particularly values papers that present experimental results or propose novel research directions that challenge the state-of-the-art.

The joint event between BMA6 (ANSP 6th Meeting) and CineGrid Brazil 2014, which occurred in August 2014, had a positive impact in the science media.

In special reports, in the first half of September 2014, FAPESP’s News Agency highlighted the events of the 6th Biannual Meeting of ANSP (BMA6) and CineGrid Brasil 2014, which occurred together in the USP School of Medicine, in São Paulo, in the week of 25 to 29 August, 2014.
In an article dated 5 September, 2014, “The speed of the academic internet’s international connection will be doubled”, Elton Alisson outlined the 25-year history of ANSP’s network operation, marked in 2014.
In an interview, available on video, Prof. Fernandez Lopez, of the USP School of Medicine, principal researcher on the Fapesp ANSP project, and coordinator of BMA6 (ANSP 6th Biannual Meeting), explains why the current speed of data transmission has become inadequate for communication between the São Paulo academic networks and the international academic community, and he announces that, from 2015, the first academic 100 gigabits internet connection between the Southern and Northern hemispheres will be up and running. This connection, currently in beta testing, will establish a much faster communication between the current networks in the ANSP Ecosystem and research networks in the United States and other countries, via Miami.

Workshop Announcement
A limited number of spaces are available for US participants at the upcoming NSF sponsored workshop on the development of a next-generation, interoperable, federated, networking cyberinfrastructure (CI). Federation has become an important tool in building cyberinfrastructure. Multiple federated systems have grown up via parallel evolution in the GENI, Cloud and Grid communities. As distributed computing, high-performance computing, and advanced networking are brought together to solve next generation problems, it is important to identify cross-community common supporting elements and technologies for federation. The workshop will bring together a diverse group of networking and CI community leaders to discuss development of next-generation, interoperable, federated, networking CI. This process of building this CI is already underway in the form of shared and federated infrastructure operated by formal and ad hoc collaborations among researchers and infrastructure owners, however, these collaborations are in large part operating without the benefit of consensus approaches for integration and federation. Creating consensus will require discussion and research among the networking and CI community and their leaders to identify and address the challenging problems in the federation and interoperability of existing and future federated and non-federated cyberinfrastructures. We request networking and cyberinfrastructure community leaders to participate to make this workshop a success.

Call for Position Papers

Potential participants should indicate their interest through submission of a brief POSITION PAPER. Position papers will be used to gauge participants’ interests and to structure discussions during the workshop. Your position paper should relate to ongoing research or cyberinfrastructure experience. Brief papers of 1-2 pages are encouraged; papers should not exceed 6 pages. Please submit your position paper to nextgenci@eecs.utk.edu. Position papers should be submitted by Sept. 10, and invited participants will be notified by Sept. 15.
